History of the Institute of Profession Nursing (IPN)

The Institute of Profession Nursing (IPN) was established in August 2006 with a gift from the Washtenaw-Livingston-Monroe Nurses, Chapter 8 of the Michigan Nurses Association. Chapter 8 nurses had a long history of leadership, continuing education, member recognition, and networking. This gift from Chapter 8 was intended to ensure the continuation of these traditions, and to support the leadership development of nurses in the area.

The Inaugral Board of Directors included Sandra Merkel, Michael Williams, Carol Williams, and Mark.Kempton.  With input from nurse colleagues, the board established bylaws along with the purpose and functions of the organization.  The foundation of this organization is the belief that there are highly skilled and educated nurses in the area and that all nurses are leaders. These nurses come from diverse backgrounds, work settings, and organizations.

IPN is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and sustaining the profession. It does this through recognition, collaboration, leadership training, education, and profession development. IPN fosters connections among nurses, and helps them to sustain their enthusiasm and passion for nursing. IPN sponsors education programs that have a reputation for excellence as well as networking and fun.  In January, an annual leadership conference is provided.

Any registered nurse in Michigan may apply for membership.
